I don’t think it’s arrogant to ask for more information before sending off contact details and a portfolio to someone you’ve never met / spoken to before. Personally, I like to know who I’m dealing with before I do that, what they’re offering, and whether or not they’re on the level.
Would you place a job advert on TotalJobs or Monster that just said “I want freelancers” and nothing else? And how many replies do you think you’d get?

Firstly, the guy calls himself “fatmammal.” Descriptive, factual-- this is obviously the name of a no-nonsense project-oriented leader, and certainly not of a porkchop. Secondly, notice the passion, the entrepreneurial spirit symbolized in ALL CAPS, no punctuation, and total lack of details. Truly, the work of a master. no, this thread should stay, and be a beacon to those who wish to do the same thing.
If someone wants to hire some help, then they should approach it like a professional, not just hoping you will be inundated with offers of portfolios.
Even with my best client, an ISP, he has to tell me what the gig is about before I agree to take it on. Just common sense is all.
