FTP help. please!

I need the help of someone who knows about FTP.

During a recent telephone conversation I had with a web hosting company, the man said that I could upload my files using internet explorer. He said that instead of using the http:// that I could use ftp:// followed by the web adress, an example being ftp://oneandone.co.uk

This does not work and I’m not sure what he means. All I get is the page not found page.

Can anyone throw any light on this? I am totally confused.

Also could someone send me an ftp address that does work so I can see what he is talking about?

Thank you.

you have to use your own website address after “ftp://” so like
if your website address was “http://www.brintonwhite.com” you should use “ftp://www.brintonwhite.com

But at the moment I don’t have a web address, that’s why I phoned the web hosting company. How do I send the files to the web host if I don’t have the address?

Thanks for your time and yes, I’m very new to this.

well you can’t upload anything before you get yourself a domain (or a subdomain (www.brinton.yourhost.com or www.yourhost.com/brinton)…

Ok thanks.

Well when i got my site (coming soon size=1[/size]) I got an Email and there was an ip adderss which i could ftp to.

I wouldn’t use IE for ftp…Get something like smartftp [here ] It is much smoother than IE imo.

the IP is the server number.

you need you login name, password, IP, and port number then you add all that to something like Smart FTP and it all works fine.

i have never heard of uploading with IE but that may be becuase i use Dreamweaver MX04 and Cute FTP to upload files.

but get a free FTP and find the info you need:)

yeah you can use IE to log onto ftps though i wouldnt recommend it, its a good option if you cant install a ftp proggie though like at work lets say  but anyways in order to log onto a ftp with username and password it would look something like this

ftp//:username:password@yourdomain.com
or
ftp//:username:password@your.ip.address

just a tip for the people using IE for FTP, though smart ftp is the best its free plus it supports FXP one of my personal favorites

Thanks to all for the comments.

I have downloaded smartftp and am now doing its tutorials. Thanks again.
