I am a user of Gimp (General Image Manipulation Program) primarily because it is free, Photoshop is much nicer, but my resources are limited. I have noticed that through the blending options in PS can achieve an awesome metallic effect for objects but, Gimp however, does not have any blending options. Hmm… If there are any other GIMP users out there could you please aid my cause.

Gradient Fill with a lot of other tweaks?
