well guys i decided to finally try and make some money off photography. A friend and I are gunna be competing with the school for prom photos. We did a test shoot yesterday and it was really fun! We’re renting all top notch gear, and a studio half a block from the prom. I’m so excited! I think we can do well, the school photos always suck. Their photographers dont know what they’re doing
Here’s a test shot I took for the advertisements, whata you guys think? The theme for the prom this year is “fly me to the moon,” so thats why we have the stars. Any ideas for cheep props / ideas for the backdrop that would fit the theme? I kinda like the stars as is, but I’m interested in hearing some of your ideas!
It’s a great shot - my only feedback is that it looks like you’ve over-processed that boy’s face. It lacks detail. You’ve done a good job, it’s just a bit too heavy-handed in my opinion.
As far as the stars, I actually quite like it as-is. It’s themed but still classy.
(also, if you have the girl square her toe off instead of pointing it she’ll have better definition in her calves.)
thank you! I actually didnt process the two models at all… I think what you’re seeing is that we placed the light a little too close which removed a lot of the shadows. We figured that out after the guy left though so we couldnt retake it.
I’m glad you like the stars, and thanks for the suggestion on posing her! I actually havent really done many portraits, so I dont know the whole posing system very well. haha. thanks again!
after using the rental gear, life just isnt the same we’re using two 400ws Elinchroms and two 600ws Elinchrom mono lights… along with a Elinchrom 74" Octa, 65" umbrella, a 45" umbrella, a 30" silver umbrella, and pocket wizards. (we only used the two 400s and the octa in this shot though, to cut down on costs) I wish i could afford lighting equipment like this… but the Octa alone costs 15 hundred… without the strobe head… lighting really does help though! I would definitely get some more lighting gear if i could afford it

Yeah I was thinking of getting two Elinchrom D-Lite 4s. 2 400W heads with softboxes for £500, good way to start I reckon.
The thing with studio equipment is that it’s expensive, but if your smart about it you can pay it of with one or two jobs. Then when you start making descent money off it you can just upgrade to better kit. Same as DSLR bodies and lenses really
@Butters- thats true, good point. I guess I plan on putting most of the profits (if any) back into my kit, I wana add a high quality wide angle lens :)… or pocket wizards… or a D3… or… lol. Doubt I’ll be able to make thaat much We have 44 people with reserved time slots now though! yay! two weeks till prom!
looks good man. id say simplistic = good and that youre almost there actually with the set. maybe (boy im about to sound a little fruity. banana.) a little glitter on the back wall? im liking the reflectiveness of the stars and they work really well together, maybe theres just a bit too much grey. or maybe have a moon in a different colour for contrast? although at the end of the day whatever the students are wearing should contrast. just hope no ones wearing grey
