Good way to have a big map

ok so im making an rpg game, and im working on my map class, the way i would like to do it is art based, but i would like each area to be a very large movie clip, that the user could explore, with then paths/doors to other areas, but i need a way to organize all these areas, i plan to have about 100-300 of them some of them might go off into 10-15 different ways while other could be just a dead end. im fairly good at action script so any way you probably suggest i probably can implement.

anybody have any good rpg tuts that tells ideas and concepts, not code to slap to movie clips
