Healthy defaults can still feel bossy

i keep bumping into products that are clearly trying to help, but the default settings feel a little too opinionated for anyone who knows what they want. the first-run experience is smooth, then you hit the one weird setting buried three menus deep and suddenly it feels like the app is parenting you.

where do you all land on this? i like defaults that save me from dumb mistakes, but i get annoyed fast when they start deciding my workflow for me.

Healthy defaults are fine until they start hiding the “no, really, I meant it” switch—buried settings are basically the product telling power users they’re not the audience. The least annoying pattern I’ve seen is: pick a safe default, but surface an obvious “customize” path early and remember my choice without nagging me forever.
