Healthy defaults only work when the override is painless

okay so i’m starting to think healthy defaults are kind of like good compression in audio — you only notice them when they’re doing too much or not enough. the best products seem to give you a sane starting point, but don’t make me fight the ui when i want to change one thing.

where do people land on this: should a product lean harder on opinionated defaults, or make the controls more visible even if most users never touch them?
