So, I was sitting here, in my infinite boredom that is quite common in the summer, and I got to wondering, what is the history behind the “Beat with the ugly stick” and “fell out of the ugly tree (hitting every branch on the way down)”? So far, all I’ve been able to find out, is that an ugly stick is actually the branch of an ugly tree that gets knocked off by someone falling out of said tree and hitting every branch on the way down. I’ve also learned that ugly trees grow in ugly forests, but I could have guessed that.
Does anyone know the history behind these famous little jokes?
