Well, Recently a person from US approched me to develop a website for his own. The purpose of this website is to maintain all his mp3 files and for the members he’ll sell it off (Give access to download)
This is the core idea behind this website. The work involves…search categories and files, search members, login, converting all audio files into mp3 and upload the same. Apart from this maintainance is also involved. This is similar kind of website www.audible.com…
But I’ll be adding almost ten different categories and many files will be maintained in each category. This is the specification about the site that I’m going to develop. Can anybody(specially guys from US) tell me that how much I can charge for this kind of website?
I can expect atleast an approximate rate for this site. And how much I should get as an advance…? If i job is only to convert the audio files into mp3 format and upload them into server…how much I can charge for this? Pls kindly help me out. Tell the rates in dollors. What do you think about this?
Its a bit unclear what you are actually doing for this site…
are you actually coding the database to manage all the files? are you designing the layout, the interface, the navigation?? or (as stated in the end of your post) are you simply converting music files into MP3 fomat?? Please inform us.

PS if you are simply converting songs to mp3 format then I wouldnt go much over minimum wage (considering your client could have his/her secretary do this with freeware) - just a thought.
As I told you I have to take care of the entire website development including the database…Apart from that coding and designing the interface…Also the maintaince of that website…I should take care of the mp3 conversion and uploading the same. I want to know the rate for handling all these tasks.
I have another job which is just to convert the audio files into mp3 format…This is a job for a different client…He also wants to know the charges for this particular job. you got my point right.
Personally, I look at each section of the development objectivly.
I would probably quote the design of the interface (based on how many hours you think it would take you to complete)
I would determine an hourly charge for database administration.
I would also set a different price for the programming of the search feature.
I like to take a route similar to this so the client focuses on the primary number that you quoted. (the interface)
It essentialy seems like a tremendous deal to the end client.
I am not saying to sweep costs under the rug, but to throw a specific number and have to keep with it could also cost YOU in the long run. If you say it will cost two thousand dollars(random number), and you get tied up on the project for three months it would be a tremendous wast of your time.
If i were you, id set a price between 2,500 - 4000 Dollars. That seems like a lot of work. 1,000 for the design, 1,000 for the database part, and 500 for the maintanance for starters. If your a really good designer, charge more.
It really depends on how much time u are planning to spend on it, and how good (objectively) you are.
