How to be creative

I’m getting into designing sites and applications in Flash and Dreamweaver, I understand the technical stuff, how to code this and make this do this. My problem is I have like no design or creative sense. I have alot of trouble figuring out what looks good with what as far as layout and color schemes are concerned. I’ve been searching for a website or book that could help me with this but always come up empty handed. Does anyone know of a book that address this or have any advice for me

Creativity in design isn’t something you can pick up from a book. If that was the case, everyone would be able to design right away.

With that said, I also think everyone is creative, some more than others.

When dealing with design, a lot of it is picked up through experimenting and observation. You did the right thing by coming here and asking questions.

What I suggest you do is observe what other designers are doing and experiment on your own. The are tons of tutorials all over the net that will help you harness your designing skills.

If you should get stuck on a tutorial then come here and ask questions.

i agree with electrongeek . you have to experement and observ .
i also advice you to look to the nature . look how every thing comes together . the blue sky , the grean land , and from nature you will get how to put colors together . and how to make some special designs . look at the finest details in nature . e.g look at wood . what can you se in it . curved lines . the brown colors mixing together . and so on . try to combine it in a design . inspire from anything around you .
for me . i inclue the destalis of nature in ma designs .

i didnt know i can write this much … .

I agree with e-geek also. But one thing you can pick up from a book is color theory. Very very very important. I recommend a book called “Color Harmony 2” Very good and cheap book (17 bucks) good stuff in there I use it as a reference. Some designers do not know how color translates their message.

Color theory from a book is an “iffy” for me. I had to play actual paint for awhile before I got the hang of it, but hey I guess some people pick it up faster.

cool. I recommend all peeps learn the color wheel and the diff between tertiary, secondary and primary colors. And how to control moods with color. Not so much what colors look good together. I think we all can do that. At least I hope

007 here is another on I found interesting:

Color Index: Over 1,100 Color Combinations, CMYK and RGB Formulas, for Print and Web Media

That is the title

look at various books, magazines comic books ads everything you have to look at it from a diffrent point of view and try to think what the message would be just by design imagine things without text and just see what the design tells you just my 2cents

lemmie think Everybody is stealing from 2advanced so you can look there 4 inspiration. Check out V.2.

Loods of ppl have taken that design.

Well I do feel that good design comes from within. I have a BA and an MA in Graphic design so I am a highly qualified designer. MY approach to a new design project is always…

1 - FIND THE THEME

2 - COMMUNICATE IT CLEARLY

3 - HONOUR CONSISTENCY

However, read all you can, learn from books, learn from experimenting, take up night classes or go to uni and become a designer.

best of luck

Get a camera, get outside and take as many photos as possible! See what inspiration you can draw from that. there are that many ideas, designs and concepts out there it’s just up to you to find them and use them however you want!

I might just do that, right now I am working on a roster for our football team, pictures, bios, stats, all that good stuff, I will probably need someone to bounce it off of at various stages of the process, there’s already a few things I have in mind that I’m not sure about.
