Instant Messengers

Alright. I got DSL couple months ago. Before that I had dial-up and everything was working fine except for the speed. I was easily able to log on to all the instant messengers that I use (MSN and AIM). Since I installed DSL I can’t log onto either messengers or any other messengers such as Yahoo, ICQ etc. etc. I have cleard temp. files, DNS cache, etc. etc. but no use. What should I do? Should I reinstall windows xp pro? I am using xp pro right now.

you should get trillian. its a messenger proggy that will let you log into all 5 things, yahoo, irc, icq, aim, and msn. www.ceruleanstudios.com =D

It doesn’t work either. :puzzle:

if you can get onto the internet fine and everything, you should be able to use instant messaging.

make sure you don’t have anything selected in the setup options of the IM like “I use a proxy server” when you really don’t

also, if you have a firewall, it could be preventing access to the net…if you do have a firewall, try turning it off, restarting (may have to remove it from startup) and then trying.

one final thing, windows xp has a built in firewall. go to your “Network Connections” icon (probably in control panel) and right click on your connection and left click on properties. click on the advanced tab. you should be able to tell if you have a firewall up or not.

hope this helps

No firewalls nothing. All the settings are fine. :frowning:

But you can enter the internet right ? There’s an option in MSN Messenger that makes it use the settings from IE. You should try that.

I think he can probably enter the internet… it’d be quite hard to post here without an internet connection

… good point

But maybe he accesses the forum from another comp

Are you using the latest versions of IMs? Bacause MSN and Yahoo had updates lately y’know

redGolgi, “you should get trillian.”

She tells me this at least a couple of times a week, but I’ve been too lazy to get it. The horror that is AIM should inspire me to download it soon, however.

Yes, I can get online from my computer. I have tried all the latest versions. I am using a cheap router. Do you think that maybe causing the problems. I know tons of people that switched to braodband but they never had any of these problems.

Try Miranda, it’s pretty cool even if it looks aweful

Try connecting directly to your DSL (minus the router) and see if they work fine. If they do, you know where the problem is.

try calling dsl helpline :stuck_out_tongue:

hmm, well if all the settings were fine then it would work… right?

:stuck_out_tongue:

It must be your settings

I think I saw it on sourceforge, so if it’s open source someone who is dedicated enough could change the look

well that’s your problem

it obviously has something to do with your router…i mean, what else could it be?

How can I connect to DSL without my router? :frowning:
