I have been thinking about getting a gaming deaktop or laptop, I know that generally laptops are not good for gaming, and my budget is about $1000 not good for gaming, I have found a deal on the Dell XPS 420 desktop with 19 inch S199WFP widescreen lCD monitor for [COLOR=#0000ff]$949[/COLOR]. Do you think this is a good gaming machine, I am satisfied with that price.
Laptop - go with Acer.
Desktop - build it yourself. Dell makes okay monitors, but their computers suck monkey teets. Theros has an awesome DIY guide in his footer, and parts are cheap now. It’s not hard, computers are like legos for grownups. You could build a really nice little rig - say, Asus mobo, AMD or low end Core 2 Duo CPU, 2 GB of ram, 8300 graphics card, a 500 GB Seagate HD or two and a reliable power supply for under a grand.
Last night my friend and I put his new comp together, all together it was 700 dollars.
2.66 quad core, 2g DDR3 ram, 2 ATI Radeon 2600’s, motherboard, powersupply, and case. The only thing he didn’t buy was a hard drive / cd rom, he just used his existing ones.

Yeah, I agree that building your own PC is a better deal. I built a high end computer last month for $800. I configured the same thing on HP.com and it came out to be $2,700.
However, I don’t agree with the parts that some people are suggesting. Don’t get AMD processors. Their fastest can’t even compare with Intel’s lower end ones. I’d get the new 45nm Dual Core Wolfdale @ 3.0 Ghz. I have it and runs at a cool 30 celcius. Also, do not get ATI over nVidia. ATI’s performance to energy usage is horrible compared to nVidia’s.
Go INTEL all the way right now. AMD is cheap, but can’t compare. Now, for GPUs stay with Nvidia as well, something on the order of a 8800 wouldn’t be bad. Also, HD space is cheap, 1 TB shouldn’t be put out of consideration.
Also, Dan I don’t know why you still like Acer so much…while they’re laptops are cheap, they’re no better than any newer Inspiron out there or any HP for that matter.
