Itunes and CPU usage

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that Itunes uses a bit more CPU usage than it should for the size program it is? Givin its so much better than anything else ive used in the past(including playing files and what not from HUGE folders). But it seems the natural advancements(as all programs often are) is to make Itunes run with using less CPU.

I dunno just a thought. Your thoughts? Other possible Itunes upgrade ideas?

Are we talking minmium CPU requirements? Or the memory platform it takes up?

If its CPU Speed

It only asks for 500Mhz…thats pretty low IMO, When I got my P3 650 back in 97 ish…(9 years ago) it would be capable of running it. PCs have a short shelf life so I think asking for 500Mhz is fine. Windows XP needs a few hundred. So I can’t imagine many people with a PC above 300 and below 500MHz…

The average processor mist be well over 1Ghz now anyway.

If its memory platform

My itunes runs about 30000K, its fine on my spec. FF uses about twice that, so maybe Mozilla need to do some work first? Or maybe I just have too many extensions. MSN Messenger Beta runs at 60000K too, so I think there are other progs that need to reduce theirs.

iTunes to me is using an acceptable amount of memory and has a pretty low spec for its PC requirement.

You’re forgetting that they add features, which usually increase the load on the CPU.

Hmm…weren’t P3’s released in 99? Pentium III - Wikipedia :stuck_out_tongue:

You could always give songbird a try. Firefox:IE::Songbird:Itunes

It’s still in the early stages of development, but it’s free so why not. http://www.songbirdnest.com/

Seems it takes much, much more CPU usage even while idling if your library is bigger, so if you’ve been accumulating music, that’ll make it appear to run heavier.

Songbird ran about 52 playing a song, iTunes is running 47. And Songbird wasnt runnning smoothly, very laggy. Might have been because I had just added music to my library, but it was still very laggy.

Busted

My bad, I got my dates mixed up, yeah i got my P3 in 99/00 in my final college year, I got mixed up with my final school year, 97/98. doh. Still mega old in PC terms.

For me iTunes uses up way too much memory and totally stalls my computer whenever I open it during the earlier stages of start-up.

iTunes is currently my most processor-intensive app running, at 4.8% cpu. :frowning:

Edit: Now it’s behind Camino.

Yeah well when I run flash 8, CS2 PS and CS2 ILL and Itunes…I tunes runs the SLOWEST. Brand new pc too. anyhow…on another note this may make me sound crazy but…

Does anyone notice Itunes likes certain music and wont play others? I think it has a soul  It loves my Billie Holiday collection, but never plays certain artists…ive noticed Ipods do something like that too…maybe it’s just me though

this is why i dont use the thing (that and i hate ipods), I’ve got flash and like a dozen other programs up and they all read 00 on the cpu even firefox which im typing in.

I think I’m the only one that has the non laggy edition of itunes

How many gigs do you have? I think they are trying to say it laggs if you have too much in the libary.

[whisper]I’ve never installed it.[/whisper]

I’ve never had iTunes run slowly on a computer.
And I’ve run it on a slow computer or two. (Like my original green iMac or ancient powerPC that predated that).

Right now I have a 1Ghz iBook which does just fine with iTunes, Flash, and photoshop running.

I also have a G5 Dualcore 2Ghz so I’m not worried about that one.

But my household and myself personally have never owned a PC.
:mu:

Do you necessarily need to run itunes ? Could you not switch to a more cpu-friendly media player ?

While Winamp is definitely less cpu intensive, for me at least, 4.8%cpu is nothing!

I have a 20gig library, and it ran the same way on Windows.

WMP. I have like 15gigs or so and it shows 00% to 02% while playing.

Yeah, 4.8 is the highest I could get it…

winamp:lol:
winamp actually is a bit better for me:)

Running about 40gigs of MP3 off it…so not particularly small.
