Laptops

Hey guys,

I am looking to buy a new PC laptop, what are some good places to look?

apple.com

Best Buy, Dell, Alien Ware.

Alienware lol … they’re great PC’s, but if you buy one, the kids won’t be eating this christmas :frowning: :stuck_out_tongue:

umm… I said PC laptop…

Best Buy, Dell, Alien Ware.
Best buy? I should try there, but I know Alienware are just over-priced machines

I got mine at a local supermarket :thumb:

Those Alienwares are unbelievable, but way too expensive.

Ive gotten 2 PCs (a desktop and a laptop) from ABS ( www.buyabs.com ) and they’ve been great. I think they’re also consistently on CNETs editors choice list for home computers.

… but a while back someone mentioned a company that sold decently equiped and cheap computers that were very stylish (a la alienware). Any computer gaming magazine is sure to have an ad for them though at this time I forget their name. I think it was… fester maybe? that got one at the request of someone else in an older thread. Might want to try searching the forums.

Avoid the Ala Moana Compusa
I got some good stuff from Fisher Hawaii

If you really want a powerfull notebook i suggest getting one from boxx technologies
id rather get one of these instead of an alienware check it out www.boxxtech.com

Alienware blows. They’re just trendy pieces of chunky plastic.

Check out Voodoo or ABS.

yeah boxx roxx ( :sure: sorry about that :trout: ), though they’ll pinch your pocket a bit

How cool would it be if we can assemble it ourselves.

dell makes horrible laptops.
@Russian beer:
what exactly are you looking for:

Cheapest laptop
Celeron processor, xga resolution, cheap

PC replacement
pentium alike processor, thick, heavy and ~2-3 hours of battery, good components, rather expensive.

extreme mobility
Centrino processor, slight, battery life time up to 7 hours , highquality materials, extremely expensive

what price do you want to pay for it?
don’t get the illusion that a low price laptop can offer as much quality as i.e. an IBM laptop. it is not abnormal for some laptops that the cooler keeps running all the time making terrible noises, or there is a hot spot in the middle of the laptop, …

I DON’T recommend these (I’ve had or my family/friends have had issues with them):
Compaq/HP, Acer, and Gateway (lots of models from Gateway just heat too quickly)

I’ve heard Sony Vaio was ok (the A series)
I’ve had excellent feedback from DELL users and had an IBM laptop, runs great

I’m looking forward to buy an Evesham laptop for uni but I think you can only find those in the uk…

edit: good laptop forum (check the reviews): http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/forum/default.asp?CAT_ID=1

I’ve heard several bad comments about dell laptops too (and some comments concerning bad dell service)

ibms are excellent, but extremely expensive except for students and theachers (studentsdiscount offered by ibm for several shops).
You will hardly find any complaints about IBM notebooks in the web.
my thinkpad t41p with high capacity battery will arrive tomorrow (2000euro) . I feel like a little child the night before christmas (I even canceled my wednesday’s regular tabletop soccer evening to be availibe early in the morning when the mailman arrives).

other good laptop manufacturers are toshiba, samsung and sony

OH! my bad, didn’t read it all

dell.com  or best buy

Ars did some good laptop reviews… lemme see - http://arstechnica.com/reviews/systems.html

Dells are good, and their service isn’t that bad either. The cooling system on my laptop broke and dell replaced it for me at no extra charge - they even paid for the next-day shipping eventhough my warranty expired a few weeks prior to this problem occuring

hmm, a friend ordered a dell laptop some time ago which had 4 broken pixel (colered) in the middle of the display, he complained, after some discussion they said he will get a new one, he returned it to them, and they sent him another one - but ~ 1 month later.

having a month without a laptop to get a new one is better than living with a laptop that has dead pixels imo…
