LCD monitors don’t hurt your eyes like regular bulky monitors do. Why is this so? Is there less radiation emitted from LCD monitors?
A CRT monitor uses an electroncannon to display whatever it shows. This electroncannon emits magnetic radiation, and it’s that radiation that causes headaches when you look at it too long, and is harder on the eyes.
An LCD using liquid crystals which are lit by letting a specific amount of electricity flow though it to color it red, blue and green. These are then combined to create any colour. Above the actual liquid crystals there is a thin film, on which the transistors are placed that manage these electrical flows. This film is the TFT film (thin film transistor). Behind the LCD layer is a backlight to, well, make the screen visible, heh.
Because there is no electroncannon, there is no magnetic radiation (which is also responsible for the distortion when for example you hold your cellphone next to your CRT monitor and get an incoming call) and therefore it doesn’t emit that radiation. It’s also that radiation that tires your eyes.
Can you clarify: do LCD emit radiation or not? Thanks.
Yes, but very little, and not the radiation the CRT’s emit. Waaaay less than CRT monitors.
whoa i never knew it was radiation. always thought it was just something to do with the intensity of the light being emitted.
just wondering…what does CRT stand for? Cathode Ray Tube?
I think LCD’s display is pretty good. On my company laptop, the LCD doesn’t handle gradients very well. Is that a problem with LCDs in general or just my video card problem?
I need to switch over to LCD mainly because of the radiation issue.
Yep, CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube. It has to do with the method the electroncannon’s beam is spread over the screen.
As far as I know, gradients aren’t LCD specific. It’s probably just your specific screen.
oh ok thanks.
lcd’s just dont cut it for gaming
Actually, they’re more and more becoming game-friendly. The newest LCD’s have response times of 12ms, which eliminates the classic ghost effect on older LCD’s with response times of 20ms and higher.

Can I touch it?
I use a 17in LCD on my home machine. Its pissa for gaming. BF Vietnam looks so incredible.
Lol
Yeah I use a 17" LCD too. Bought it like 2 weeks ago, and it’s a huuuge difference from my old 15" CRT :beam:
