Linux on PowerBook

I managed to boot up with a cd linux on my powerbook. And I want to know if you guys are against linux?. Should I continue using it seperated testing and learning? where should I end up with? Would it teach me something new? I had couple of minutes with it. But I also want to know if I can partition my harddrive “powerbook” into to without having to lose my data. I have checkt someprograms but did not managed to see something free to do it. also- I have an 200gb external harddisk that i got. Is it possible to install linux on that and load it up on my powerbook. Its connected with a firewire. :gi:

edit: sorry if you wish to try linux you can get it for mac from here and also to pc

Knowing how to use different kinds of OS’s can be advantageous but I suggest you play it safe and use a separate system to familiarize yourself with it. As far as partitioning while not lossing data… you can use a program called Partition Magic. (not sure if it will work on ubuntu linux though)

^^ totally agree…OS preference is very subjective depends what you want to do…if you develop open source languages like java, php, ruby etc then linux is perfect…otherwise windows or osx may be better.

All depends on the user my friend

You can resize HFS+ using directions that can be found on the ubuntu forums here.

I’d wait until Dapper (sometime in June) is out before trying Linux now, as Dapper is looking really nice

Thanks for your tips and help. I tried to boot it by CD and it workt but it lags because it has to load from cd, so I maybe will try to install it on my windows maskin first and try that, with partition magic. What is Dapper? where can I find more info on that I tried google but it brings me to ubuntu

Dapper is the next version of Ubuntu

wow great. okay I got Ipartition from a friend now, Im partitining my external harddisk 25 gbs for linux format, and its doing it. maybe its going to take time. but I hope I can install linux on my external hardisk… ;(

I’ve never had a good feeling about Linux. I’ve only ever used Redhat and Fedora, and it’s always slightly lagged and just generally caused frustration :stuck_out_tongue: lol. Not so noob-friendly.

Ironically enough, I found SGI IRIX to be 100x easier to use than Linux :S

yeah I was just trying to learn phython on it. but I failed to install it on my external hardisk. It has to be installed on the main one. Im going to try for windows.

I got this problem now everytime I start my mac the upper bar does not show any clock/Airport/Spotlight icons and the battery icons? help!!!:jail:
only the adobe suite and gmail notifier

IRIX is similiar to OSX, in that it only runs on a select range of hardware and so does not need to worry about hardware compatibility.

That’s probably your problem right there :stuck_out_tongue:
