I would have to agree, Number 2 is much easier on the eyes 
hhmmmmmm…I like the image in 2 but I like the upcoming events area in 1. 2 is a little easier to read. BUt 1 entices a mood a lil more. I guess you can say 1 is more emotional. I have to go with 1. Since I believe people should experience the web and a page (usually) should invoke a feeling.
2 is easy to read but a bit flat and plain (which I like a lot)
but 1 is a bit funkier (?) and has more character, to me anyway
so I vote for 1

Both are very nice, number 1 is very trendy and bold, but it is an eye sore after looking at it afterwhile.
Number 2 is trendy as well, but is more mellow compared to number 1 and the content is easier to focus on.
I went with number 2, but both are great. =)
I like number 2. The PS stretch effect looks pretty cool, too.
I agree with 3D-iva.
I also vote for number 1.
The mood and feel of the page is more emphazised then in the 2nd one. It is harder to read, so it really depends who your target audience is. If your aiming for young adults, then stick with 1, otherwise go for 2.
1 feels more groovey
after viewing 1 number 2 is just too plain :-\

Definitely number 2. I don’t like the background tile in the first one at all. Makes it too dark and jarring. You also have trouble reading the date text against a similar colour background.
#2 is the best!
