Mac - Font Management

I am a new Mac user and have taken on a project which is driving me up a wall. I’m coming to the conclusion that Fontbook and Suitcase are conflicting with eachother which may be causing some of my current problems.

A few questions

  1. Should Fontbook fonts be disabled all together to insure the 2 programs aren’t trying to enable the same font?
  2. Should Fontbook be closed while using Suitcase?
  3. What would cause red x’s next to the fonts in Suitcase when I know in fact the fonts do exist on the Mac?
  4. As of right now I have a central font directory for this project, this is not in the system fonts folder, would this have an effect on Suitcase? What if the same font is in both locations?
  5. In suitcase we are activating sets by clients not by font types. So if we are doing a job for whoever, J&J we activate the J&J font folder. Which makes no sense to me, because what if S&S has some of the same fonts? It seems to me what would be better is activate fonts as you need them by fonts not by clients. Opinions?

If anyone could shed some light on my situtaion it would be appreciated, I’m kind of lost when it comes to this stuff
