Masking?

hi guys, ive never done a mask before. I have a circle, which is just a shape tweeining across over text, and made the circle’s layer a mask. When i click and drag over the timeline it works fine, but when i watch my movie… no mask? if some one could make an example of a circle mask goin over text, it would be greatly appreciated
