Memorising times tables makes no sense to me as an adult

I remember being at school when I was 7 or 8, and being taught to memorise these 144 equations…

And it always used to make me think…

why would i possibly need to do that…? I’ll just work it out…!

Is there really any need to fill childrens heads with multiplication tables, when there’s actually a single, easy equation to figure out all values?

Just as we don’t hand out logarithm tables in maths classes nowadays, since we can simply use a calculator to figure out those values to infinitly more accurate values, should we not be refraining from filling our childrens heads with meaningless memory feats…

Work it out stupid…

In fact, I’d go as far as to say, that it’s even less value if you DO give results from memory, since it sort of defeats the whole ethos of mathematics, at least as I have come to understand the subject…

Another question would be why do I feel it necessary to expunge the contents of my brain after lots of orangeboom…???
