It’s not a racist comment. In the hispanic community (which is pretty large, mind you, and will reach 25% of the population by 2010), it’s a pretty popular sport. More Americans watch soccer than hockey. This is a fact.
Studies have been done about popularity of sports accross racial lines. In terms of soccer, caucasian males are less likely to play or watch it. However, this does not mean that soccer is not a popular sport in the US. Hispanics and caucasian women make up a pretty big base for the sport. In general, male caucasians have a good sense of the popularity of the major sports, but don’t know anything about soccer.
When you say that soccer is the rest of the world’s answer to the fact that the US dominates every other sport, it shows your ignorance not only about soccer, but about the sports you hold close to your heart. Soccer has a very long history, and it established its position as the only sport that matters around the world long before american football, basketball or baseball were invented. America dominates these sports basically because it’s the only country that seriously plays them (except for Japan, where baseball is the national sport). These games were created in college campuses in the US in the early 1900s, while soccer has been around much longer.
Also, just because the etymology of other words, such as rugby or cricket, aren’t similar to that of football, it doesn’t mean that other people’s comments arent valid. Football refers to kicking the ball with your foot, and based on the meaning, it correctly refers to soccer, and it is incorrectly attributed to american football. However, again, if you knew anything about the history of the sport, it was originally a variation of soccer, that’s why it was called football. As time passed on, the kicking was disallowed in most situations, but the name stayed on.
Again, when you say “every other professional sport” you have to realize that they’re only played professionally in the US. You could put together the superbowl, the world series, and the NBA finals, they wouldn’t be anywhere near as popular as the World Cup. The Superbowl, the NBA finals, and the world series are regarded as curiosities around the world.
