I’m on photoshop 7, and I’m trying to do something like this

So far, I’ve created a layer with blotches of color and I’ve applied some filters. My guess is that I should add a layer mask to this and I’ll have a colorized picture. I have an inverted grayscale image that I would like to use as the mask for it, but I don’t know how to paste that into the mask layer. Whenever I paste it goes into a new layer (and I’ve tried paste into) Any ideas?
