Fading

how to fade a picture gradually ?
not a specific color, like in “gradient”, but the whole picture.

(i am talking about PS7)

thx

use a mask layer. CLick the quick mask button at the bottom of the layers palette. Be sure to have the layer selected you want to mask. The choose the airbrush tool configure its flow and opacity (be sure to use black color) then start spraying the area you want to fade. Also you can use a selection tool with a rather high feather. Make your selction the with the feathered selection and then use the paint bucket tool with black color to fill you selected area. Keep in mind this also has to be done on the masked layer. There are other ways but these are the most straight forward. Let me know if you need more help.

a quicker way would be to create the quick mask layer…then on that layer use the gradient paint bucket tool…then just play with the direction via the gradient bucket options.

both ways work.

yeah that is a better way…forgot about that way.

nothing seems to work. each time i use any of both options, i loose the whole picture. i have attached an example pic, i want it to starts fading away gradually from left to right for example. can u guide me ??

i am quite a starter in such things and i am learning.

thx

try selecting all, copy, new, ok, edit, paste, create a new layer, apply gradient fill (foreground white to transparent). That might work. not really incredibly sure of what you want by your description.

when you make a new mask for a layer (not a locked or background layer - if it is, double click it and release it to be a single free layer) using Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All the mask layer will appear next to the preview of the actual layer in the layers panel. Then hold ALT and click on that mask layer preview box. This will set you IN the mask itself on the screen. there you can draw your gradient where ever you want (with the gradient tool) then hold ALT and click the mask layer preview again and see the results

… you can also use a new gradient layer on top of the image and use a layer effect like darken or burn or whatever, depending on the effect you’re after

In the layers pallete click on the layer that contains your image. At the bottom of te pallete you will see some little icons click the one that looks like a box with a circle in it. This is the “add mask”. Now you will notice in the layer that contains your image there is now another “white” box to the right of it. This is your mask. The 2 boxes are separated by a chain link. Leave that alone. Click on the white box next to your image in the layer. Now select your gradient tool. Make sure that one side is black fading into white. Now drag across you image and voila. Instant fade!

Here is a example using the above described method. Is this what you want? By the way that girl is “OFF DA HOOK”.

Proof positive that there’s 9 billion ways to butcher a pic in Photoshop.

yeah thats it. i will try ur way as described, thx to all of u buddies.

I really hate to burst your bubble, although salma hayek is very very sexy. Brooke is just Unbelivably hot. AND…she was in playboy…in case anyone wants to check it out. :A+: :A+: :A+:

also be sure to play around with the gradient settings on your paint bucket… sometimes that can screw things up…or make it perfect…

i kept wiping out half a picture once…until i realized i had the gradient wrong…

lol relax guys, burke and hayek r both hot, not only to mention that salma hayek is originally from my country, as well as shakira …
