Night Cellphone Message Program

What a freaky title :nerd:

Anyway, it’s 2:39am over here in Belgium, and some of the commercial tv channels have these sort of “cell phone message programs” (over here in belgium, we call 'em “sms” (short message service)). Basic principle is: you send a cellphone message to a number, and then it gets displayed in this “live chat room” on television.

And out of pure boredom, I stood still while zapping at one of those channels, and after reading a couple of those messages, I got really depressed.

It were mostly messages like:

“Man, 27 years, feeling very lonely. Call me.”
“52-year old retired man, looking for soulmate between 40 and 60 years old. Call me.”

This one particulary struck me; he was answering another question:

“Well, I’m 49 years old anyway. One doesn’t find true love at that part of his life no more.”

I felt really sorry for this man, and for our whole society. In Belgium, 50% of the suicides are done out of loneliness. I think it’s really sad there are so many lonely people out there who need a friend or a helping hand, or just some love. Maybe I’m naïve for typing this, as there are much more worse problems in the world, or maybe it’s the fact I should go to sleep because I always get melly late at night, but I still thought I’d write this down. So if you know of anyone who’s lonely, or who you haven’t been in touch with for a while anymore (eg. grandparents, family, old friends…), maybe you’d do them a big favor by getting back in touch with them.

Just a thought. I should probably get some sleep.
