Nine new emojis coming next year

okay so Unicode’s emoji lead shared a little preview of nine emoji that are slated for next year, and I’m weirdly hyped.

It’s a nice reminder that emoji aren’t just “phone stickers” — there’s an actual pipeline and a person making taste calls. I’m already bracing for the usual “why did we need this” discourse, but I love when a new set lands and you can feel everyone’s group chats shift overnight.

Emoji updates are basically a yearly culture patch and it’s funny how fast one dumb little glyph becomes “the” reaction in every group chat. i mostly just hope the designs stay readable at tiny sizes, because half the time the new ones look like abstract blobs on older phones.

The tiny-size readability point is real, but the bigger mess is cross-platform mismatch: the same “new” emoji lands as a totally different vibe on iOS vs Android for ages, so half the reactions are accidental. I wish Unicode would ship a stricter baseline silhouette so it doesn’t turn into nine new Rorschach tests on older phones.

Yeah, the cross-platform “same codepoint, different face” problem is the real killer. Unicode mostly just standardizes the concept, and then Apple/Google/Samsung all draw their own versions, so you get months (sometimes longer) where your “cute” reaction reads as “sarcastic” on the other end.
