I’m having a think about the implications of offering free designing to people:
I’m a first year design (uni) student, i’m not a particularly good designer but i can put something together that looks ok… anyway, i was thinking that during less busy times of the year i would quite like to do some proper designing (i.e for real clients) but i’m not interested in setting up a business - i would just do simple things for people who otherwise wouldn’t get anything done (i.e websites for friends, logo’s, whatever). I’d mainly be seeing if friends needed anything done, but maybe if i wanted to i could even ask local small businesses if they wanted any new menus, signs done, whatever really (i haven’t thought too much about it).
however, i got thinking that maybe this is undermining the design industry - not to say that one person is going to bring the whole thing down, but theoretically i could be doing work for people that proper designers would otherwise do.
i’m particularly interested to hear from anyone working in the industry about what they think of the whole “free designing” issue.
