OpenAI just cut its own fundraiser by $10 billion — the AI selloff is getting personal

So this one caught my eye because it’s not a stock chart anymore, it’s OpenAI itself feeling it.

The Financial Times reported Friday that OpenAI trimmed its latest funding round target from $30 billion down to about $20 billion, with the valuation sliding from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion. The Wall Street Journal separately put actual commitments so far at around $11 billion — less than half the original target — with OpenAI planning to pitch family offices and wealthy investors next. OpenAI hasn’t commented, so treat the exact final number as still moving.

The timing is hard to ignore. The Nasdaq just had its worst day since June, down 2.9% on Friday, and it’s off 7.8% from its October 6 high. A UAE group including MGX is still expected to be the biggest backer, and OpenAI is reportedly racing to get this done before Anthropic lists and ahead of its own planned 2027 IPO.

What’s interesting to me isn’t that $20 billion is small — it’s still enormous — it’s that even OpenAI is having to meet investors where they are right now instead of the other way around. Does that feel like a healthy reset to you, or the first sign the private AI money is tightening up too?
