Photoshop question: solid shading to crosshatches

I am re-working some patent drawings for a company, and need some help with Photoshop. Apparently the patent office has some pretty strict guidelines for the drawings you submit - such as, you cannot have solid color shading. I have some of the original drawings in Illustrator format, but most of them are just plain images (eps, jpg, gif, etc…). I’m wondering if there’s a way in Photoshop to somehow change the solid color shading into crosshatch shading…

Anybody have any ideas?
