I have to say, this is bothering me more and more and more. I’m not sure I’m the only one, but I doubt it.
Apart from Kirupa forums, I moderate 1 other major AS forum as well as hanging out in 2 additional ones. The attitude of people that post for help is more or less the same wherever you go. There are a couple of different versions of people
#1 “I refuse to try myself” will post a lot. In any given sub forum there will always be at least 2-3 posts by him in the last 20. The questions range from tiny problems to huge ones. Once one question is answered, he will immediately post another one of the next problem. Forget google or books.
#2 “Why aren’t you helping me” has a strong sense of entitlement. He will post a problem and then post in his own thread 3 hours later with something like “Is my problem really that hard?” or “Come on 25 pageviews and no answers!!!”. It doesn’t matter what anyone says, this guy is sure everyone else is paid to help him.
#3 “Give me code for this effect” posts a problem that is so broad you could cover the topic in an entire book. IE “How do you make this kind of site”. He will very often follow up with something like “Can you give me tutorial pls” or “Give me example code pls”. If you try to get him to narrow his problem down he will either not respond or be very upset.
#4 “Yes, but…” will post a problem, wait for the solution and then post something in the style of “Okay, that works but that’s not EXACTLY what I want. Can you show me code for EXACTLY what I want?”. Forget any kind of experimentation!
#5 "I am new to this… " will post a seemingly complex problem and then at the end say something like “I started actionscript yesterday”. Most commonly these people have no idea what a variable is but they are still trying to make a full papervision3d site that interacts with metablobs.
#6 “THIS IS URGENT!!!” will try to project a catastrophic sense of urgency on to you. Often something like “My job depends on this” or “I need this tomorrow!!!”. It doesn’t quite matter what the problem is, it’s just really really urgent and you’re job is to speed up! :proud:
**#7 “What’s wrong?” **will most commonly describe a scenario like… “I have this xml mp3 player that works yada yada BUT…” and then towards the end there’ll be a question like “What’s wrong” or “Does anyone know why”. No code. No links. It’s intuitiveness that counts here! Go Gadget Psychic powers!
#8, Everyone else. The good posters.
Sorry, had to let off some steam
