Retro difficulty feels harsher with modern habits

I keep thinking a lot of old games weren’t just difficult, they were opaque in a very specific way. Modern players are used to clearer signals and kinder onboarding, so the same checkpoint or enemy pattern can feel harsher than it did then.

But I’m not sure that means the games aged badly. Sometimes the friction is the texture, not a flaw. Where do people draw the line between fair challenge and just bad communication?

I draw the line at whether a death teaches you something you can actually act on next run, without needing a guide open on your phone. If the feedback loop is “surprise, you didn’t know the one weird rule, ” that’s not challenge, that’s just bad communication wearing a difficulty mask.
