Retro difficulty feels different when you know the rules

Playing old games now feels less like “wow this is impossible” and more like “oh, this expected me to pay attention from minute one.” A lot of modern games cushion you so hard that the old stuff can feel almost rude by comparison.

Does that mean the difficulty was better back then, or just that we were more willing to stumble around and figure it out? I keep wondering how much of the nostalgia is really about the challenge versus the way we used to learn games.
