rollOver Menu HELLp!

Hey everyone,

Although this is my first post, I have actually been using Kirupa.com since starting to work with Flash a couple of years ago. Having mainly focused on timeline animation in the past, I am now keen to do more with ActionScript now that I have the time to practice & experiment more. That said, I have been trying to build a reasonably scalable yet attractive menu system for my first full site (for my Uni department) and I just cannot seem to get past the following problem… can anyone help me out please!!!

Basically, I am trying to build a two level menu (a bit like that on Macromedia.com before it became Adobe.com) which pulls all the button labels in from an XML file. The idea is when you rollover a ‘mainButton’ then the corresponding sub-menu of ‘miniButtons’ animates into view… the problem is that whenever the mouse moves from the ‘mainButton’ to the sub-menu (to click a ‘miniButton’) that sub-menu will disappear cos the mouse is rolling out of the ‘mainButton’. I have tried to register a hitArea shape which expands when the ‘mainButton’ is rolled over; although this does allow the sub-menu to stay in view, none of the ‘miniButtons’ can then be accessed (ie: clicked).

I have spent far too long trying to work this out for myself and I just cannot seem to find another way (one that is not highly complex anyway). I know there must be an easier way to get it to work so if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be well thankful!!!

Cheers,

Andy McDee
