SATA HDD Question

My mom wants to use my old desktop computer (it’s not the best but it’s definitely a step up from the one she’s using now). Anyway, I just figured it would be easy to pull out my old HDD and keep it rather than having to deal with backing up all of the old data and formatting it.

So my dad bought a new Hard Drive at a Comp USA close-out sale for a steal. The only problem is that it was an SATA HDD and the motherboard doesn’t have an SATA plugin.

I bought an adapter for the motherboard the power cable. When you turn the computer on the drive spins but it can’t find the hard drive.

Anyone have any idea how I would go about getting it to work? Someone in the Newegg reviews for the adapter said something about having to format it on a computer that has an SATA native motherboard but I’m not sure if that statement has any merit.

I’ll post the specs of the computer as soon as my mom emails them to me. I’m thinking maybe a BIOS update? But I don’t know.
