So I’m in the process of trying to snag a new host, and I already have one that I’m leaning towards. I’m looking at another host to compare the one I have in mind and that’s slicehost. My inquiries are directed at slicehost, I don’t want to hear opinions on other hosts’ services, I just strictly want to know about slicehost:
http://www.slicehost.com
From what I can gather after reading reviews, they’re a great host. However, it seems as if when you buy a slice it’s as bare as a newborn baby’s bottom. If I wanted phpMyAdmin or apache, I’d have to find a specific article tailored to the Linux distro I chose to install on my slice. There’s no webmail (not that it matters for me specifically), or multiple email setup interface … basically things that are more common on a VDS, or any other host, aren’t found here.
I read a review
http://www.sysadminschronicles.com/articles/2007/10/30/slicehosts_slicemanager/
and after looking at their panel, it looks restrictive and like a poor basecamp knockoff. Though I really like the options that they do give you in case you fubar your system
I’m a pretty computer savvy person but not so much when it comes to complete server management. I know how to SSH in to a server and do some basic commands and installs, but I’ve never set up a server from scratch. Anyone’s detailed thoughts or opinions on slicehost and my “concerns” would be greatly appreciated
