Small tools are easier to trust

small-batch software has always felt easier to leave when it stops fitting. giant all-in-one apps are convenient right up until they start deciding your workflow for you.

maybe that tradeoff is worth it for some people, but i keep wondering how many teams/users end up staying because switching feels annoying, not because the big app is actually better. does anyone else still prefer the mess of separate tools?

The “annoying to switch” part is real.

I can relate. I like to have them all on their own tools but they do need to work together. When one application ceases to serve my needs I can switch to another without affecting the rest of my applications. The convenience of a large all in one platform can be great at first, but the data migration retraining and workflow changes can cause people to stick around even if they are unhappy with the software over time.

My dream tools are a few specialized tools that mesh nicely together instead of a single tool doing it all.

“Mesh nicely together” sounds nice until you’re maintaining six brittle integrations and nobody can migrate cleanly.
