I want to start learning 3D by my own.
Any suggestion as where to start? Also I want to buy a book to guide me in learning 3D.
I have a good drawing skill incl figure drawing, but I don’t have any experience with 3D before.
Thanks

The first thing you need to assess is what your going to do with 3D. Animation, graphic art, moddeling or abstract art. This is your starting point. Once you have settled upon this, then decide a good renderer. Any 3D application is well good already for any particular project. After this, choose a 3D application. Dont get deterred if someone else uses something else. Its just a matter of preference which has been said quite a few times already. I dont really think a book is necessary nor is it going to help you much. Maybe explaining tools and so forth but not deep techiques. Anyhow, keep practising to the power of 10. Budget wise, try Blender 3D first, avaiable for free of use @ www.blender3d.org . Use it, advanced your skills and when you think your proficient at making particular projects, move on to something like 3D Max Studio.
edit: please try and search next time.
Thanks Minimalistik,… and sorry for that
first thing is to decide a package. Which you had better not ask on this forum. Or you will be executed… Nah but it has been asked many times. search.
get some good inspiration ! www.cgtalk.com is the place to be.
Try buying some specialised magazines and tryout every demo they give to check which app you’re most comfortable with. Try learning terms so that you can quickly follow intermediate to advanced tuts on the net.
how can one decide on a package before clearly knowing what certain softwares do for you, www.cgtalks.com, you just dont start 3d just like it, know your goal, plan it out, give it some real good time, as minimalistik said u dont need a book for that.
Phase 1
Checkout all the 3d softwares, get indepth knowledge of basic requirements for a person to start it out.
Phase 2
Know your goals & start with the one you think is the best for you.
I started with swift 3d then 3d max and now maya…in the meanwhile I keep experimenting with stuff like cinema 4d and all.
try http://www.cgnetworks.com (cgtalks.com if u know japanese)

Be patiant and MAKE sure you have a very good system, good RAM and very best of the 3d card.
Hope it helped
