Textured materials shape a Mexico City penthouse

Barde vanVoltt turned a two-level Mexico City penthouse into a stripped-back “brutalist sanctuary,” layering textured stucco, stainless steel, and sculptural stone across the 300-square-metre space.

Here’s a look at the Mexico City penthouse where Barde vanVoltt turned raw textures and sculptural stone into a brutalist sanctuary.

Keeping the palette tight really works here, and that textured stucco against the stainless steel feels deliberate instead of chilly.

In a 300-square-metre penthouse, the metal will show glare and fingerprints fast, so lighting and upkeep need to be part of the design.

@Ellen1979, Yup on the glare/fingerprints. I’d also worry about stainless meeting stucco: without clean shadow gaps and movement joints, you’ll get hairline cracks and edge waviness that read “cheap” fast.
