The Art of Negotiating

This is the situation…

Apart from having a strong portfolio, what do you guys use to sell yourself to get the salary you deserve. This is the scenario… I freelance a lot, but now I think I want to settle into a company that is offering me a job. The maximun amount they want to offer will leave me with a reduction in the yearly earning I made freelancing. The job responsibility equates to a lot more that what they are saying is their max but is up for negotiating.

I want to know how do you guys sell yourself outside of your portfolio, when the company knows they could pay you more but wants to hire you for the minimum amount possible. What do you emphasize.

i cant talk im getting used big time - i wish i knew how to do it too :ninja:

Do you have something unique to bring to the table? Like dynamic flash? Or do you have return clients you can bring to their business? Can you make a large difference in their business, or make their job easier?

Also don’t be afraid to let them know how much you gross in freelance, even offer to take the job with the ability to do your own freelance work. Make usre there is not a competition clause that prevents you from doing your own work. This may cause them to re-evaluate how much your worth, as they want you all to theirselves.

And don’t be afraid to throw in the towel, if they don’t want to pay enough, remember that there are alot of options out there. You are a talented Flash designer, you are a valuable commodity, don’t sell yourself short. You always have freelancing to fall back on, maybe you can wait for a better offer.

I think they were impressed with what I have done and was more impressed since projects in my portfolio reflected where they are taking their business, which was exploring the realms of XML integration in Flash Technology, and mobile delivery applixcations and php development.

This is the third time they are requesting to meet with me to discuss terms etc…

a lot of bullting is always good, and if you are good enough at it so as they don’t know its bull you will get paid real well.

stress you can take a job from start to finish but you are a team player/leader, crap like that. Most likely its true but even if some of its not you will pick it up real quick at most places.

I think most places want you to hit the ground running, so stress that you are that individual.

if you decide to take a smaller offer re-negotiating 3 to 6 months later after they have seen your work is possible and I do it all the time.

hmmm… i see your points… you know and I don’t know if you guys might agree with me on this… but developers like myself that dive into the technology head first do it because we have a passion for it. Saying that a lot of developers work better or output a lot more when they don’t have to worry about issues with remuneration…
