What do you guys think of the painting program Gimp ?

the gimp is a mix of photoshop, illustrator and painter all mixed into one program, its natively from linux machines as a image editor and vector creating app, its not bad but its no where compared the industry standards (photoshop, and illustrator) but hey its a free app so my suggestion is try it if you like it use it i just dont want to waste my time learning a program that is not going to benefit you, if you plan on working as a designer or illustrator.
My suggestion is just stick to the industries standards and you will be better prepared at the time to get a job, just my 2 cents

no not really, you can try and getting the educational versions which are cheaper :-\
the gimp is great ! it’s open source, like Linux (or other Unix-type progs/OS/etc) which means people correct the software and always enhance it. However it’s kept by linux-people and as grim said - linux people are not the design industry standard - since almost all commercial apps are only available for PCs and Macs with windhoes or MacOS…
