I think it is the most ripped and copied sites ever.
just remember common design practices are the best! i mean for visual cues to lead your users where you want them… but you can still retain a certain level of originality. ANd rememeber, nothing is original anymore, its just a variation on one idea or another =)

Exactly true
yeah i know how you feel sintax, i cant think of anything either
Well i’m getting a second domain name for more business type purposes so i need to do a layout for that. I’m split between something original or sticking to the norm.
I think the norm is the way to go with the business site then do some thnig crazy go nuts for my personal site .
you’ve seen my site…
nothing original, except my portfolio items…
the people visiting my site usually want to see what my “styles” include, and to steal ideas for their sites (which is okay as well)…
normal will get you more gigs…

Rev
That’s normally the best way.
And if you find that your insane personal website would be great as a corporate website… then why not convert it? :).
when you think about it, everything is ripped off, if you get inspirtation from “the subway, the city” etc. your just ripping off engineers if you get inspiration from “nature” your just ripping off “god” or whatever you happen to place your beliefs in…
heheheheheh
sorry i had to :trout:
Heh it’s true indeed. But as I have said twice now I think (just in this topic), being INSPIRED by something is absolutely, positively, fine.
note that you said “ripping-off” when referring to inspiration - which is not the same thing
It’s stealing it that I don’t support - and I misunderstood/misinterpreted one of Pierce Gleeson’s previous posts and got the impression he was saying it was ok to essentially steal somebody’s website design as long as you don’t know them / it’s unlikely that they will find out.
Being inspired by the things in your surrounding environment is only natural but if you look closely, you can still create your own art work without stealing the “ideas” of nature…
JK.
Sorry. I should clarify.
I guess I was saying that when you are taking inspiration from someone elses work, it shouldn’t be someone that runs a site on the same topic as you, or links directly to your site, or attracts a lot of the same type of audience.
I mean, if I go to my friends site, who links to my site and I link to his, and I see a really nice tween effect on his flash menu, and decide, “I like that, I might use something like that in my menu”. And I create something similar, thats bad. He will come to my site, and be rightly annoyed that I’ve used his effect. People are going to be going from one site to the other and comparing the effect.
BUT, if I go to some site about… sports or cars or something (something my site is never going to cross over with) , and see an effect there that I like, and create something similar for use on my site, thats not bad. There is never going to be a direct crossover of traffic betweeen the two sites, no one’s ever going to go to my page and then go directly to the other page and say “This page ripped off Pierce Gleeson”.
Thats what I meant by your next door neighbour and the guy across town. Sorry, I don’t know a simpler way of saying it.
I see what you meant now. It’s actually quite a good way of explaining it :). Although, there is a minute chance that somebody who likes cars also likes whatever your website is about (presumably graphics/web design/personal) and then they do compare the effects :bad:.
There will always be that chance. The internets a big place.
There will also always be a chance that you have made exactly the same effect as someone else purely by coincidence. But again it’s a small chance.
