Trying to figure out a new site layout for my self. iT jsut seems it has all been do before. NO matter what some one comes up with someone some where else has already done it.
i figure go with the lack of navigation tools, where random bits of your page are actually buttons thats gone beyond bad navigation to “creative” navigation… plus scatter paragraphs all over the page… you could be the picasso of Web design…
If you’re in the city, take a look at the subway, take a look at the buildings, the cars, the sky.
You could have a small building as the navigation - move your mouse over a window and a small image loads up to the left/right with the name of what you have selected - e.g. News - (with funky flash effects applied of course). Then if you click it, you zoom into the window so that you can see the room as such. Then you have the room fade-out / an area where the news will go fade-in. And as a result, the room is the background and the news is in the foreground. You can add objects and even people if you want into the rooms to make them more interesting.
There is endless potential and you can always create something new and original. Just look for inspiration in the world around you and look for the courage to experiment within yourself.
If you’re in the countryside, take a look at the trees, the leaves, the plants, the animals, the sky. Again, plenty of inspiration there…
The biggest problem I have is being limited by my lack of skills. I can’t create what I can imagine. Just let it flow - don’t force it.
But at the same time, isn’t it up to the person who made the original design whether or not they improve it?
I mean, testing your skills and seeing how good you are at making something better is one thing but using it on your own website is theft imo. Even if the original isn’t copyrighted, it’s sinking to a whole new level.
I don’t agree. I’m afraid, using the general web design resources available to us, everything seems to have been done before. Somewhere.
I’m not talking about nicking someones code, but to be influenced by someones site is not theft. It is not theft to look at someone’s site and say, I like that design. I’m going to try and create something similar. But better. Fair enough, if the person you did it to was someone you knew, that would be a bit… mean. Like buying the same car as your next door neighbour but with a bigger engine… Or something. But it’s ok to buy the same car as the guy who lives across town. If you get me.
There is a difference between being “influenced by” and stealing somebody’s website. Until you see that, I guess you will still be stealing other peoples’ ideas.
I mean “oh, I like that colour he used for the scroll bar” or “oh, I like that idea of a scrolling ‘latest posts’ thing for the forum/news” is ok imo.
However: “oh, I like that he has used X colour scheme for his website with Y buttons with Z format for his news posts with W mouseover sound effects with V font and U Flash effect” is not. ]-> A little exaggerated but you get the picture :).
The way you say “something similar” and the context… I get the impression that you mean take the website, change some colours, change the content, make it a little more interactive, the end. And that is just theft imo.
And “Oh it’s ok - I don’t know this guy and I think he lives in another country so I am going to steal his website design and as long as he doesn’t find out, I’m fine.” is just so low that it’s shocking.
yeah… please let me reitterate my statement. I never meant to imply that you should steal someone else’s work and then claim credit for it. “Influenced by” is something all together different than plagerism. (though I’ll admit that it’s a fine line between the two.)

You can “get the impression” all you want and you’ll still be putting words in my mouth.
You’re also assuming that I practice the ideas I’ve been sounding here. I have never knowingly imitated another individuals design in my life. Oh, sorry, there was that one time when I was 5, there was this guy sitting next to me, he drew a really nice house with this latticed window effect. I copied that. It felt kind of bad too.
But I’ve been influenced plenty. I’ll like to see who hasn’t.
Anyway, to suggest that you’ve never been influenced by another site’s design is ridiculous. Everything you do is imitation to some degree. Such is the process of learning.
IF 2advanced tried sueing every person who has a site similar or inspired to them it would take forever. THey only worry aobut exact rips. No matter waht original idea you come up wiht som one will do something similar or has already done it. JUt when u think u have something oringinal you will always find someone wiht something similar.

aint that the honest truth. I purposfuly stay away from anything that looks like 2advanced because EVERYONE copies them.
It’s really gotten to the point where if someone in the forum here asks how to do something “see, 2advanced.com”, I completely ignore the request. I don’t have time to go back there every time to see what sort of effect they’ve created for a button rollover. Most of the time it’s simply tweening anyway… which can’t really be taught… it just has to be copied and improvised from there.
yes everyone… you heard me right. I hate 2advanced and all of it’s work, not because they are not good, cause they are, but because all of the newbies have ruined that site for me.
It’s like hearing your favorite song a thousand times. Eventually it just isnt interesting any more.
Pierce Gleeson, I didn’t intend to offend you but it seems like I have. I’m sorry but I do indeed “get the impression” all I want and I really did get the impression that what I posted, was what you were saying. I have no intention of putting words in your mouth - I am merely stating that there is a difference between being “influenced by” something and stealing it.
We are indeed influenced by pretty much everything in our lives and that is how we learn and develop and that is why you get different people with different personalities. And I don’t deny that we have all been influenced by a website or some form of art that has an impact on what we create… and if you read my post, I did actually say that being influenced by something is fine - stealing it is not.
So, in reality, it all comes down to where you draw the line…
Yep if you reall look at waht they do all the effects are quite simple. There is no advanced coding or anyting jsut simple tweens put together amazingly well. THe thing is having the creative mind to pull somehting like that off. I think 3/4 of the designers i know buitl a 2 advanced copy there first flash site me included.
Hey. It’s ok. I wasn’t offended. I’m just talking here.
Everything comes down to lines. And lines are never that solid. Or even in the one place for very long. And people never seem to be able to look at the lines and agree that they are in the same place. **** lines…
