Time for a reformat

For the past 2 weeks, my computer has been pis*ing me off. The CPU has been running at 100% constantly, svchost.exe has been running at about 15k which is abnormal and everything from opening a file to locating one, IE browser window lockups when pressing _blank links. Causes are most likely:

  1. Norton Subscription ended
  2. Havent installed sp2 yet
  3. Loads of crap.
This friday is going to be judgment for my computer. Uninstall everything and put back things i really need only.

One thing though, Im going to install my sp2 cd. Should I install it straight after I reformat or after when I install the basic software applications back up like Microsoft Word, Dreamweaver, etc. ?

I would suggest doing it before and making sure your system is stable.

I have heard a few reports of people comming out of an SP2 install with butloads of problems.

So I say do it first and make sure your good to go before you drop a few hours installing apps.

BTW…stay off p0rn sites
:beam: :run:

If I were you, I’d first find out what the problem is before you reformat. Of course it’s a pleasure to reformat, you waste a lot of time. Trash Norton and install AVG from www.grisoft.com. Also, check for spyware/adware and crap like that. After all those are done and you’re still having problems, go into msconfig and uncheck crap that you don’t need.

“MINIMALISTIK” – I also have done a reformat as well, After installing XP Pro, the second thing I installed was SP1, then after SP1 I installed SP2, then after that I installed everything else such as Adobe, Nortons, etc…

SP2 works like a dream on my computer and i also wondered if i should install it as the first thing or last. I did it first and everything runs perfect so im not complaining.

Ok thanks for the replies

Thanks for the advice but im in for the reformat because of my initial problem of having too many files i dont really need. The other problems just came by and topped it so yeh…

Don’t forget to double check your files before formatting I don’t know how many times I’ve been half way through formatting and I’m like “crap! I forgot my fonts!” or something similar.

If your computer is anything like mine your installation should be like this:
Windows>Drivers>Service Packs and Updates>Other Semi Important Stuff>All the other crap that fills my drive

I find it to be the fastest and most reliable way to format.
Have fun with your nice clean computer

Thanks Wanyo  Yes I will make sure I double check everything. I have already made a sperate area in which I have the zipped files ready. I nearly forgot to copy my fonts as well but luckily I made sure last week. I will probably will use AVG after the reformat tomorrow afternoon but Grisoft could at least make some improvements on the user interface, it looks like its made for Windows 98 only…

Hey I just realised something. When you open an application, obviously the .exe would appear in the process window in Task Manager and showing how much memory its using. But when you close the application file down, wouldn’t the process be taken off from the total processes running?

When you close an application, 1 or more processes should shut down.

To be totally safe, I usually make an image file of the drive (if you have the space), format, then just incase if I didn’t backup anything, it’s still in the image.
