To Javascript or Not to Javascript?

Hey guys,

I’m thinking of making a party planning site where the party guests will have to log in and chose options. I’m planning to market this and it might be used by hundreds of people. The problem is that I feel Javascript will really add to the site (especially Lightbox and a little AJAX) but I am afraid that I will receive complaints from users that have Javascript disabled. I don’t want code a graceful degradation alternative either. I can just use plain HTML and it will be more usable but it will also lack any sort of fanciness. So, my question is…

Is having Javascript on a widely used site a big problem and should I use it? (I’m assuming that whoever turns off JS will also have the knowledge to turn it back on and I can also provide a page with instructions on how to do so)

Thanks in advance, :disco:
