Use of fonts in logo design

hey,

i’m currently designing my first logo taht will actually be used commercially, and i realise i’ve never actually clarified if fonts can be used in logo design.

i figured it’d be fine because i’ve bought the font or at least got it with software so i thought it’d be provided there for use (why else would it be there?!) but i read this article:

http://www.gag.org/dear_mark/mark_fonts.html

and it seems to say that it often ISN’T ok, even if you modify little bits.
i find it hard to believe that all logo designers create their own fonts, because although it’s satisfying, it takes a long time and doesn’t always look good.
the particular font i’m using is CG Omega which came with our printer, and i can’t find any specific legal advice for it.

anyone got ideas…?
i don’t want to hear from people who don’t actually KNOW something about it (no offense!) but i know there are a few here who work a lot with logos.

cheers,
.stu

Actually I was just pondering upon this topic a few days ago- I’m interested.

you should try and find the terms and conditions for those fonts that you plan on using, online may be

yeah but as i said, i can’t find anything for this one… it came with my printer and i don’t have any documents, nor did a web search bring up anything obvious

honestly to be on the safe side I would alter the font. If it came with your device you should have the rights to use it. I normally create my own logo-types or fonts or alter the font. I think you are int he clear tho. I think the violation comes into play if you dont change your fonts to paths and send your files to the printer. Thus requiring you to send them the font as well. Now you are sharing the font which you may not have the permission to. Contact your printer manufacturer if you are unsure.

Most fonts come with a readme file with specific terms of use. Make sure you read it. Some say all uses are permitted, some say you may not use them for commercial use.
