Variables, how do i

i haven’t used flash since #5, so this all is pretty new to me, sorry for the noobulocity. how do i use varialbles in cs4? i’m trying to make it so that when a button is clicked on, a value is assigned to a variable and the animation resumes, then when the appropriate frame is reached the playback jumps to the frame corresponding to the variable value. any help is greatly appreciated.
