pity your government didnt give a crap when the IRA were bombing us in the 80s. The answer is that fanatics will always exist. We have to look to our own governments as to why the commit these terrible crimes.
Bin Laden is a product of American foreign policy, just as the IRA was a porduct of Enlgish foreign policy… GET USED TO IT
HAHAH, that is so true, thats what I thought, but I love that Quote! Dammit billy! Good job!

But to be brutaly honest, the reason we didnt care about the IRA, its because there was absolutley no national US intrest at state.
We would have gained nothing out of it.
Now if something like 9/11 happends to the States, the economic effects are felt through the world. So it is in UK’s national intrest, that nothing happends in the USA.

While i agree with the premise of your arguement, you should approach the subject with more care, as many people are very sensitive about this topic. But you are right; the rooster has come home to nest…
yeh fair point majeye, im just a str8 talking guy, no offense intended to any americans, it was a horrible day… but my family comes from northern ireland so we approach it from a more matter of fact way
thanks Russian Beer sadly thats how western governments sometimes see the world, ‘What in it for me?’… Clinton supported the IRA out of pure ignorance

I would have put it that there was no finaicial gain for the US so they didn’t care.

Hmmm, did I here of the US paying countries and offering trade deals etc to join the coalition ? Nah I must be dreaming……
But then again, we (Australia) sent over nothing, and now our companies have recieved billion dollar contracts for projects there. So large compainies have gained from being in the coalition.
What about WWII, true we had to save our own ***, but we could have done it say…two weeks later and you guys might have been gone.
Nah what the real kicker is, the British supposedly knew that the Japanese fleet was on it’s way to Pearl Harbor. But they kept it a secret because they knew once the Jap’s attacked America it would have no choice but to join the war.
Yeah, I learned that too, my history teacher was a pimp (she). But hey, the American public needed a motive to get in the war, the government was all for it and whatnot, but our country is so much dominated by public opinion that without its consent not much is feasible, unless we’re blindsided and duped (patriot act???). If I were the British government then I would have done the same thing probably–anything to get the US into the war. BTW, I’m British too though I’ve never been there (I have a dual citizenship because of my dad, it comes in handy too!)
Warn the US, the Japs turn around and perhaps the US doesn’t join the war. And you perhaps give away that you can read their codes.
I still think they should have told the US…. I mean the fact that the Jap’s were trying a sneak attack on the US while it had its pants down should have been enough for the US to join the war.
I don’t think the British should have let all those people die…. Not to mention the amount of US assets lost that could have helped the war effort.

And my father is a dam pom too…*

Its just a speculation, there is not enough proof for this. Another speculation is that the brits told FDR, but since he was pro-war, he decided not to tell anyone.

I thought it was now accepted by historians, I saw a documentary on it and I believe that it gave the time period that the British where able to decode the Jap’s communications and that they had that ability long before Pearl.
Although I guess they could be wrong, and I don’t remember the documentary very well.
I dont think so, while I havent seen that documentairy, I know that the USA could already decode anything the Japanese could throw.
And many of the US top brass knew an attack was coming, its just no one knew when. They had a good idea, and they received good intel the night of pearl, but due to the fact that the secretairy of war was out horse riding nothing was done. They actualy did send eventualy a message to suspect an attack, but it came 2 hours to late. (even though it was sent before pearl-attack)
I dont know if that is true, about us not telling you.
It doesnt make sense, because you would think that if we warned you about an attack like that, you would join the war effort anyway because it would only be a matter of time before the japs had got you.
I learned that we actually had a patrol going out to look for possible intruders near the Hawain islands, and that we missed the Japanese fleet by like 40 minutes and a few miles on one of our patrols.
Its funny to watch the progression of this conversation. We go from speculating possible ways to divert terrorists to insulting eachother and fighting to talking about how we got into WWII (sorry, I was the one who brought it up). Is there anyway we can just freeze this thread and we can all go to the random and duke it out there?
Topics evolve that’s just how it is, if you started the thread and don’t want it to drift just post “Back to topic”
This is ordered and people know that means, back to the topic of the original post.
I don’t think anyone is attacking anyone here, ordered can get pretty heated at times because people are passionate about their point of views.
Most people try to control themselves because tit for tat in ordered is a quick way to kill a thread.
As for duking it out, a debate on a subject is a fight, there is a winner in debating. Lets not mistake debating for tit for tat.
