Website critique

i am an architecture student trying to learn flash for my own purposes and i’d like to know if someone who knows what their talking about can explain how this site is constructed. (www.kdlab.net) The way the site loads immediately, presents its work efficiently (with out preloaders) and allows for quick navigation is something that i would like to learn about. i’m sure the entire site is done in actionscript but i really don’t know. so if anyone can offer up a crit please do because i would be greatful for any feedback. i am longing for a book that takes a cool website and shows step by step how the site is built.

thanx in advance.

If you want to see how a nice site is built from scratch, with great tutorials, you may like to try http://www.lynda.com/products/videos/interflash5cd/

It’s quite expensive, but if you watch the demo video you will see it probably has pretty much what you’re looking for.

If you are looking for a book to introduce you to Flash, I recommend Flash MX H-O-T .

Throughout the book you learn the different features in Flash but you also learn how to implement them into a complete site. It does touch on some basic ActionScript but nothing too in-depth.

i recommend KIRUPA.com! i had books, but nothing can compare with this joint man. hang out here, actionscript.org, and flashkit.com…you’ll learn…oh,the things you’ll learn!!!

The kdlab.net is an effective website which i like myself. Their main initial structure is masking. At the start, alot of masking is made over layers which make it innovative. However, as you go through, they have small preloaders that load small info of the site. But you need to look at tuts here and at other sources such as ultrashock and ask q’s here as many times as it may need be. But as a start, borrow some books/buy and start from there. Feel more confident with the basics than start on the advanced stuff.

jbradd,

i am the designer of www.kdlab.net, and can answer any questions you may have about how the site was created. feel free to email me.

as minimalistik indicated, i am using some masking, but primarily i am using actionscript tweening for the movement of all of the transparent tones on the page.

thanks for all of the kind feedback.

if you are interested in other architectural sites, you can check out the following that i also developed. it uses a lot of the same techniques as the KDLAB site as was requested by the client:
