I find myself more frequently wanting to create a small flash website, but I spend endless hours surfing websites such as media inspiration etc. I end up finding a site I like but then I get hooked and can’t create something original! I’m sure I’m not the only one out there! I’m not an artist and I have never been gifted when it comes to freehand drawing etc! All I’d like to do is create my own little site from scratch and share it with the world! It would be so rewarding!
Instead of getting ideas from a single site, build what I call a hybrid. It’s a combination of styles and elements you see from several sites. And when you’re done, you can change it even more to make it your own style. I know it’s easy said than done, but it will work if you try. Good luck. =)
Thanks for the advice electrongeek! I have always focused on one site, but your approach seems reasonable! However, like you said it is easier said than done!
Don’t look at Flash sites. Look at something else. Go outside and look at the objects around you. You might randomly see some kind of motion or shapes or designs that you like.
It sounds cheesy, but that’s how I came up with my site.
But still I need to know what the site will be about! It is not only the design process that I find hard but also what content to convey! For example I think that
is an awesome, stylish as well as minimalistic site! If you pick microbians interview from the left drop-down menu you’ll see what I mean! This is the kind of stuff I’d like to do, but not just copy!
Coming up with content has never really been an issue with me. I have a few hobbies here and there and I enjoy writing even though I’m terrible at it. In any case, I guess just think of something you are interested in… maybe even think of a story you’d like to tell.
I think the main hurdle for me is to come up with a great design that could best deliver that message.
That microbians thing is awesome! I doubt they got the idea from looking at other sites. If that’s what they were doing, they would probably have a site that looks a lot like 2advanced.com.
yea ren rulez…the splash page is jokes!! the 5 cofees for high bandwidth then only 1 for html…clever clever…lol…but it works pretty fast on even dialup…maybe you should reduce number of cofees to say about …3…
Yes, I love the microbians site. They are the creators of the Chromeless window ya know.
They were the first to use it, and theirs was way better than the one they released. It was different in a way. Still a pop-up, which sucked. But their flash version in it was awesome.
But then Chromeless Windows became unsupported by any browser and they put their Flash site in a regular browser window. It didn’t appear so nice, so they switched to this awesome HTML version.
I get my inspiration from things around me. I get ideas when I walk to my girlfriends house (45 minute walk) or when I walk to the store or pretty much anywhere. I could just be driving by something in a car and an idea hits me.
Shane driving along in car… Suddenly an idea hits him…
“HEY! I got a great idea for a website!”
Shane raises finger in air, a look of glee on his face…
A semi barrels through the intersection, taking the back of Lost’s car with it.
“HEYA! That gives me another good idea…”
I have an old geocities account myself (Yes Yes, I did use it once… yuk, I hated it. It got me inspired to start learning web design though), so if I really needed to, I would do that.
