When climate pledges meet AI compute reality

So Amazon’s building a 7.65 GW gas plant for a data center and somehow this is still a surprise. The 2040 net-zero pledge was never the priority. It was just the thing you say at conferences.

This isn’t them flip-flopping. They looked at the economics of AI compute, looked at their emissions targets, and picked the one that mattered. The gas plant is the honest answer.

Not my lane on climate policy but the compute demand thing tracks with what I see in perf work, everyone wants the fast version and nobody wants to look at what powers it. training runs pulling that much load makes sense why they’d want dedicated gen instead of fighting grid constraints. honestly kind of surprised it took this long for someone to just say the 2040 target out loud instead of quietly missing it later.
