WIP - a plant

hey all!

I’ve decided to try and model a plant, and I wanted to incorporate some SSS into it as well, since I still don’t know how it works… :sure:

anyway, I’ve looked a little into it, and I’ve come up with this first test-render of a simple leaf-model with SSS (or in vray: Absorption).

this is only meant to be a test of how the light comes through the model, so the quality of the SSS is low.

More pic’s will come as I model more

Render 1: Subsurface Scattering:

hey eilso looks cool. have you used th OGO Hikari stuff for it or Worley’s ???

Looks cool; although I doubt plants are this translucent…
I’ll be waiting for more renders =)
(oh and can you post the rendertimes ???)

cheers,
mlk

mmmmm…Worley…Fprime . Good work eilsoe.

Wth is Worleys…?

mlk: No, they’re not translucent, but SSS is not about that either, it’s about simulating light through solids. Like wax.
I’m sure if you hold up a light behind a leaf, some light will pass through and scatter around inside the leaf itself, like above.

Actually I dont think Worley makes anything for other packages I believe Steve is all LW. But I could be wrong. Brazil does these types of effects right nicely, but I like your example eilsoe.

But this is his site
http://www.worley.com/products.html#topproducts

like the effect… the light comes thru quite nicely…
so my question is what is sss and what is it’s lightwave equivolent…?

ouh… I see. So it’s a series of plugins for LW then… I like it’s SSS plug.

if you’re interested, you can see ray’s SSS in action here:

just go to Gallery -> Vray and scroll down to about the middle… that guy is gooood…

very cool, i like the shadows

yeh I have to add some more veins to that leaf :sure: I thought it was good… but in defense, I’ve never made leaves before :stuck_out_tongue:

SSS is a way to fake translucent materials (like wax…)
I tried placing a leaf in front of a light source and (well it was a fully grown up plant)… it wasn’t translucent at all.
Younger leaves are translucent but not anywhere near as much…

quoting from richardroseman’s site:

Absorption is used for simulating translucency. Unlike Sub-Surface Light Scattering (SSS, 3S), the light is absorbed within the subject instead of bouncing about and contributing to internal illumination.

nice link… good site… yeah he has some skills…really talented, I think I may have seen some of this images before can;t place it tho cause I surfs a bit,
but never the less he’s got some awseome images… ok so now I get sss, you learn something new daily…, but that’s why I hang out here with you all… :tb:

he’s pretty active on cgtalk, and his plumber video is a big hit apparently… I really want to see it once it’s released !

ooh… fancy! Something new for me too. This is different from Max’s Translucent shader no?

What sort of timeframe are you getting for your renders? I’d love to see a comparison between the translucent shader and SSS.

mlk: Sorry, I thought you were talking about translucency as simple opacity

Ironi: This one above took between 10-15 minutes to render. However, it IS a simple model  Richard R has some more complex models on his site, dunno how long that will take to render. VRay is still a fast renderengine tho…
